BREAKING NEWS: Broadcast flag is back

I just saw that Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), the inspiration for our iPod campaign, introduced a Net Neutrality bill in the Senate today. Sen. Stevens took this oppertunity to slip the broadcast flag into the bill. From Multichannel:

According to a summary released by the Senate Commerce Committee, the Stevens bill would:
...
Authorize the FCC to establish a broadcast flag to allow TV stations to protect digital content from Internet piracy; There are lots of things going on in this bill, it's 135 pages, but any bill that enables the FCC to implement the Broadcast Flag must be stopped.

This is another tool in the arsenal of the Hollywood cartels. They are attempting to overwhelm the tech community by introducing terrible legislation after terrible legislation hoping that we don't notice or are spread too thin fighting their other bills. This comes right after IPPA (DMCA 2.0) in the House and Senator Feinstein's (D-Hollywood) PERFORM Act in the Senate.

Time to prep those phone calls and emails.

EDIT: Alex Curtis over at Public Knowledge has more on the new legislation including a copy of the actuall bill.

Speaking as a former Alaskan, Stevens was and has always been a douche-bag. Why, God, why do we not have Congressional term limits?!?!?!

I think it's time to put good ol' Teddy here on our watch list and get ready to nix him when it comes time to vote.

So you're worried that this will "ruin" television? Since when was television any good?

"Since when was television any good?"

You're missing the point. It's a good way to reach a wide audience.

is it so much about legislating restrictions on something that sucks?

or is it a case of legislating restrictions on our *freedom*?

orwell would be proud.

What is with this guy?!? First he and his fellow Alaskan congress-critter work to kill an offshore wind turbine power plant in Massachusetts, now he wants this. I am amazed at the level of government lobbyist money can buy. Our personal freedoms are being eroded faster by these clowns than beaches are by global warming!!!

Speaking as a current Alaskan, Ted Stevens is still a douchebag. Yet there's some misconception by many residents that he's good for the state because he brings in money. The truth is, the majority of his pork only benefits him and his cronies, like, y'know, land development on an uninhabited island by building bridges and such. The end result, of course, is that we get screwed because nobody will take our other issues seriously.

But will they ever vote Stevens out of office? No, because they're blind and they just keep hearing that he's good for Alaska.

The point is, as many times as decent people try to vote this man out of office, we can't seem to wedge him out. But he should at least win some sort of bonus award for corruption.
