Google and the World's Knowledge

You may have noticed some extremely exciting news on the knowledge sharing front - Google is going to digitize some great research libaries. John Palfrey points out that our copyright regime isn't necessarily ready for this. But it'll have to get ready. After all, who doesn't love libraries? And who doesn't think the internets is the greatests? And when you combine them, wouldn't it just be most awesomest thing ever?

The answer is yes. We can finally build the library of our dreams - all knowledge theoretically searchable and archivable and accessible to all people. Let's make sure bad law doesn't get in the way.

(Incidentally, I met the head of Disney's PAC yesterday - she's a charmer. I suspect that it's critical to convince content industries that reasonable copyright laws have at least as much chance of being good for their business as bad. After all, the "Boston Strangler" of the content industry (so Jack Valenti of the MPAA dubbed the VCR in the 1970s) contributed to the massive growth of the movie studios over the past twenty five years. Currently after release sales are most of the profit, to the point where movies in theaters have almost become advertisements for DVD releases.)
